Robson Square skating rink hosted over 60,000 last season
Since the 2010 Winter Olympics, Robson Square Ice Rink has been the place to be in downtown Vancouver to ring in the new year and the same goes for 2012.
The iconic location hosted more than 1,700 people in 2010 and 2012 and is once again set for an evening full of celebration and family fun.
This will be the fourth annual celebration at the rink. Festivities this year will include a magical show for kids, live music, DJs and two free early countdowns with noise makers and party hats. Then there’s always the skating. The ice will be open starting at 9 a.m. and will close around 10:30 p.m.
“Traditionally, people want to hang out with their friends and neighbours to celebrate the end of one year and ring in the next,” said Charles Gauthier, of the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association. “There’s no better place to do that than at ‘centre ice’ in downtown Vancouver at Robson Square.”

Robson Square itself was designed by Vancouver architect Arthur Erickson and opened completely in 1979. The ice rink, which became Vancouver’s first outdoor ice surface, opened in 1982.
More than 60,000 skated at Robson Square last season.
“Skating at Robson Square is a fun, affordable activity for families of all ages, and a great way for everyone to get a little exercise while having fun together,” said citizens’ services minister Ben Stewart.
The rink stays open until the end of February. Admission is free.
